A record crowd (57,635) at Orlando County Stadium showed up to see their young upstarts take on undefeated Pittsburgh (6-0), but went home disappointed as the Maulers squeezed the Juice. Hershey Walker collected his first 100+ yd game (119) for his new team, Marlon Charles chipped in 88 with a score, and Gordon Jones took over the left side when top WR Jon Sylvester was ruled out after twinging his hamstring in pre-game warm-ups with 108 yards receiving. Julius Williams struggles continued, again with under 50% passing (11-26) and his first pick in 5 games to drop Orlando to .500 (3-3).
HOUSTON 31 BIRMINGHAM 20
Birmingham may of seen the season the season go "poof" when Houston LB Catfish Munson stumbled into QB Seth Norstrom left knee in the 2nd quarter in what had been a tight ballgame. Backup Peter Stambaugh couldn't move the team, and Houston (4-2) used a James "Quick" Parker blocked purt returned for a TD by D Lineman Earl Toye to drop the Stallions (2-4) to their worse start since 1983. Darrin Kelly had another awesome game for the leagues most feared offense, completing 23-33 for 323 yds and two TDs, 12 of them to TE Dennis Haysbert (120yd 1TD).
DETROIT 41 MONTREAL 32
"Probably the most embarrassed I've ever been on a football field" is how deadly serious LB Thunder Thompson described the ol' fashioned whooping Detroit (5-1) put on his Accolades (3-3), as the Racers bookended the first half with kickoff returns for touchdowns, the first 95 yds by Norv Everheart to start the game and a 92 yd jaunt by Dexter Thorn with no time remaining to make it 34-14. Montreal closed the gap, thanks in part by Rex Thorpe, who filled in nicely for the injured Kevin Graham, with his first 300+ yd game (330) but had to hurl 43 attempts to get it. Detroit QB Tom Issacs had a far easier night, who only put the ball in the air 8 times-the lowest attempt total in USFL history.
FORT WORTH 22 OAKLAND 32
The Dragons (5-1) gave the Rolling Thunder (4-2) a taste of their own medicine by powering to victory in this highly anticipated, possibly future playoff matchup. HB Erik Davis had another outstanding day, with 132 yds and a TD on the ground plus another through the air. QB Danny Cavanaugh managed to throw three TD passes, but also three picks. QB Robbie Bosco (17-28 204 yds 3 Tds) extended his games with at least 1 TD pass steak to 11, dating back to last season.
