WEEK FOUR NOTABLE GAMES

Post by Daniel Warner »

BOSTON 20 PITTSBURGH 27

Jon Sylvester made a brilliant 18 yd toe-tapping catch with just nineteen seconds remaining to keep the Maulers (4-0) as the only USFL unbeaten. Trailing 20-6 with under 3 minutes remaining, the Breakers (2-2) cut it to seven with a 13 slant from QB Pat Lange to RB Scottie Flynn, then tied it by capitalizing on Jimmy Ng's fumble of the ensuing kickoff with Lange's 14 yd scramble. Unfazed, Maulers QB Paul Haven produced a speedy 10 play drive to break the Breakers hearts.

MIAMI 21 NEW JERSEY 24

Angel QB Jim Powers, without injured star wideouts Rod Tipowa and Alfred Simmons, still managed to put up 352 passing yards, but the Aces (3-1) won their 3rd straight by allowing just 39 on the ground. George Wilson had no such difficulty, grinding out 113 yds while LB Isaac Fontaine recorded another defensive TD with a 32 yd Interception return to spoil new Miami (1-3) coach Harold Jackson's debut.

CHARLOTTE 3 LOS ANGELES 27

Last season, Assistant Chuck Gladdis guided the Express to six wins in 7 games while coach Leeman Bennett recovered from offseason back surgery only to see LA go 1-8 upon Bennett's return. After starting out this campaign a listless 0-3, Bennett was fired to promote the 33 year to full time duties and he rewarded the fans by shutting down the Wildcats (2-2). Sydney Weeks put up 190 yards on 33 carries, while 1st round rookie LB Brandon Thomas recorded a sack and a pick.

SAN ANTONIO 10 ORLANDO 26

While many experts spent the week praising the Rattlers for last weeks OT steal from Oakland, perhaps they should of been more focused on the Juice (3-1). Fifth overall pick Robert McKenna carried the ball 29 times for 154 and 2 TDs in a dominating performance, while QB Julius Williams fell to managing the game with no turnovers for the 3rd straight week.

MONTREAL 13 FORT WORTH 20

QB Danny Cavanaugh shook off the stink of a six turnover debacle last week to knock off favored Montreal (3-1). RB Prince Taylor was held to just 49 yds rushing while the Rolling Thunder (3-1) made up for Jamell Forester's absence by combining for 208 as a team. LB Mark Washington had two picks.
