Okay, Here Goes!

Well, my website is far from finished. As a matter of fact it may be one of those "work in progress" type of things. Any suggestions or comments are welcomed. Keep in mind, I am far from finished and definitely not a webmaster.

The Website

Post by steelerman »

I have not gone to a domain name yet but will see how this does then decide.
Ben and Joe, I have a question. I have tried to send the UFL data but I seem to be having a problem doing so. how can I send the data to my website in order to post it?

I think the main question is, what are you trying to send, and how are you doing it? I've never tried to send any UFL data direct to a website, I usually incorporate it into the HTML code. Once we figure out what you're doing, putting it together shouldn't be a problem. :)

Site looks good so far, Kevin. I'm impressed. Loving some of the team names too! Vegas Blackjax, Copperheads, Loggers, all different to the usual suspects I ripped off for mine (Miami Hurricanes, Toronto Blizzard, Calgary Stampede, etc) but what is a Wabasher?!? :D

Wabasher?!

Post by steelerman »

I tried to come up with original names that have not been before for a team, which is very difficult. What is a Wabasher? Well, Inidianapolis is dificult once you get past the whole racing theme to come up with a name so I looked at geography and other factors in that area. The Wabash River is a major river in the state of Indiana, thus the Wabashers, Hey, I know it is a stretch but I tried my best to come up with new names. Some are corny others sound stupid but hey I can always change them, right?
I will write later about the data I am trying to send and my problems. let me try the HTML code method first that you suggested.
By the way, we do have copperheads here in North Carolina, trust me LOL!

Definitely, that's why I stuck with the old tried and tested ones, hence I've got New York Knights, New Jersey Generals, Jacksonville Gators, etc.
Closest to an original for me is my team, Schoburg Franklins, which is the default team name from my much-loved old Amiga sim "Headcoach", which I mourned for over a decade until I discovered UFL!

As a side note, this is post #100 on this forum! Yay! Congratulations, Ben, we made it into 3 figures! :D

Schoburg Franklins...

Post by steelerman »

you have got to love that name, very original and I like it. I would like to know the history behind that name. I may explain how I came up with each team name somewhere on my site. I have many more that I have created in the past.
I will also create a USFL league and put that on the site as well. I will use the original names with a disclaimer of course. I don't want to infringe on copyrights.
Joe and Ben, the problem I have been having is how to transfer stats primarily the standings onto my website if possible from the UFL data. As you can see on my standings page on the site, I have a standings board on it but I am not happy with that one. Suggestions? By the way, I will playing the western conferences west division first games tonight to round out week one. I did not get around to finishing all of the first week games.

I like the site, steelerman.

As far as adding UFL data to your site, there are a couple of ways that you could do it:

UFL has a print-to-file feature that will print stats to a file. You could upload the stats files to your website and then put links to the files on an HTM page. That is what I do on the My UFL page (http://ufl.no-ip.info/myufl/). But that method does not allow you to have the fancy HTML colors and such like your current standings page has. For that, you must copy and paste the data from the stats files to the HTML page (which appears to be what you're doing now).

I hope that makes sense. :)

As I said, I used to own an Amiga, and I had a football sim called Headcoach, where you coached an NFL team called the Schoburg Franklins. This would have been around 89/90, and I was totally addicted to that game - I searched for over a decade after I sold my Amiga for something which would give me that same thrill, and I finally found it with UFL. Even more so, truth be told, as UFL gives me way more in terms of options and gameplay than Headcoach ever did. Anyway, the Franklins were the fictional default team, and I even went as far as to give them a location, history etc, which I maintain to this day.
They're located in Pennsylvania (Schoburg has that kind of "steeltown" vibe), if I remember correctly I managed to find a "Franklin Adams county" somewhere in Penn, so they play at the Adams County Stadium, their uniform is an exact replica of UCLA Bruins, and my boss, the GM is (god alone knows why I picked this) ex-Dallas Cowboy, Steve Pelluer!
So there you have it. A 17-year love affair with a fictional team.

Ben, I did copy and paste which seems to be the easiest for the standings. As I said before this site will be a work in progress type of thing. I want to include a little more promoting of the UFL in it as I go. One idea I had to promote this, and both of you can give me your thoughts on this, is maybe I can join a few hobby/games/simulation/football type of ongoing forums or webrings. That may be a way to reach more people. of course, I have yet to do any type of promoting my site. This is the free version on Bravenet. I may go to a full hosting version with a domain name later. I would like to make some money off of my site but to exclude the UFL in that money making venture. Not sure how to go about that or if I could do that at all.
Joe, I liked the history and concept behind your Franklins. So your boss is an ex-Cowboy? I'm sorry  just kidding! I had an ex-boss of whom I still stay in contact with by the name of Buddy Curry, Atlanta Falcon pro bowl linebacker back in the 80's. He is a all-around great guy. He has told me many a good stories about his days in the NFL.

LOL, I should clarify: my "boss" in terms of my UFL fantasy team only. I don't work for Steve Pelluer in real life, nice guy as I'm sure he is. :D

As I said, I don't know/remember exactly why I chose him to be the Franklins' GM. I have a theory that it's something along the lines of me playing Headcoach around 1989 when the Cowboys drafted Aikman from my Bruins, and figuring Pelluer to be out of a job, I gave him a job as GM of my team. :)

Let me know how you go with this, I'd be quite keen to join any of these too. Always interested in discussing this kind of stuff with like-minded people.

Now I understand "your boss". Love the concept. Later tonight I will look into some webrings that are as closely related to what we enjoy as I can. Hey, since there is a National Electric Football Championship Tournament, which I saw on the news one night recently then I know there has got to be webrings out there for our hobby. HA!!!!I will let you know what I find.
